another newbe need advise
(2 posts)-
Hi all im new here and need some help. I have at work my main PC that has a program on that used to be on an office service before the server broke down. The hard drive from the server has been put in my PC as a second hard drive & the server has gone as we have split up the staff and we have 2 smaller offices now. I can run the program enter the data and its saved, what I would like for 1 of the office staff in the other office to access my pc and run, enter & save data over the internet (ftp) the same as I do, so my pc is acting as the server but over the internet, is this possible. I have downloaded SERV-U and I have set it up to access the files\program that we need on my pc but when they log into ftp site and click on the exe file for the said program it only give them the option to run or save the exe file but it will not run as a program like it does on my pc. Can this be done somehow and if so please can someone guide me
Thanks

Hey there Steve!
First, nice work getting an FTP Server running - that's cool! However, the flow here has a glitch. Basically, you need someone to be able to access this application, as it is installed on your computer. To do this, you need to enable the remote users to actually control your PC. So having them access the .exe via FTP won't really work.. but there is some good news.
There are services that can enable exactly what you need. One of the most popular is VNC. Another (free!) example is the "remote assistance" feature built into Windows. You can check that out here. And yet option is to use Logmein which also lets external users access a main computer.
