Cant update my website?!
(3 posts)-
Hello,
Just looked through the forums to see if this has been answered before but can't see anything...sorry if it is there somewhere!
So, I sucessfully uploded my website using cuteFTP or smartFTP (sorry can't remember which one) a few years back and since then I have always had trouble updating it. I really dont have a lot of knowledge of how FTP works so would appreciate some help on this.
When I log on there a a list of folders that appear there that are from the original first time I uploaded. I have tried to delete these and they don't seem to actually delete. When I click into them they just seem to open up another folder then another and dont seem to have anything in them anymore. I have tried to add my new website on and it seems to work, doesn't say it has failed or anything but then when I go onto my site its the same old one!?
Once when I tried it my website disappeared altogether and I had to just re-load the old one.
I hope this makes sense to someone! FTP really is like hacking into the matrix for me so any help would be great as I really need to update my website.
Thank you!

There are many Tutorials for CuteFtp on YouTube, you might want to see some of those and they may give you an idea on what you need to do.
Once you connect to your host/server you should be able to delete any and all folders and files that you have uploaded. I am not familiar with CuteFtp but there may be an option somewhere that you might have to check off to do this.
For instance in WS-FTP "Options" there is an option of "Allow deletion of non-empty folders". One can check or un-check this option and CuteFTP may have a similar one.
You can also ask your host to delete this folder and you can then upload you new web site files.
Also, when you view your new site you might try clearing your PC's temporary internet file cache as this may cause you to view old pages instead of the new ones.
