After i install a FTP server software in my XP, but i can't access it.
I'm behind a proxy. IP address which i get from most website 137.132.3.7, quite sure that this the proxy IP, check with http://www.ip-adress.com/what_is_my_ip/
But the IP address i get from ipconfig using cmd is 172.19.171.111

i can access the directory using IE: ftp://172.19.171.111/ from my own computer but not from outside.

So what IP address should i use and how is the format(ftp:// ???) so that i can access from outside ?

hi Vyiskhoo,

is your ip static?

can you tell me a bit more about your hardware setup? do you have a router? do you have port forwarding turned on? if the router is not set to forward ports 20 and 21 to the your server, your router won't know how to handle connections from the outside - so the connections will likely get blocked.

or if your router has DMZ capabilities you can use it to point to your server, which leaves it wide open to the internet (be careful with this!!)

Should be a static ip. Each time i start up PC with the same ip address.
I don't have router. I'm connect to internet via Lan though my school network.

Could this be due to my school proxy don't allow forward of port 20 and 21 ?

Thanks for looking into my question.

*when i behind a proxy, when i connect to outside server, how the outside server knew that my pc is requesting, and send the data to me?

By the way, can anyone tell me how the website server recognize user behind proxy? since request to the server is done by proxy and the Ip it get would be the proxy address.
