PCI DSS compliance requires any organization that accepts or processes credit card transactions to protect the security, privacy and confidentiality of cardholder information… AND to document who accesses it, and the security measures (including encryption) that are taken to prevent theft, loss, or accidental disclosure.
Of course, as with most compliance initiatives, PCI DSS compliance is more complicated and far-reaching than it initially looks.
